Remote-detonated device used unwitting female courier in attack bearing hallmarks of prior targeted killings in Russia
A homemade explosive device killed three people and wounded at least 21 outside Balzi Rossi, an upscale Italian restaurant in central Moscow, on Saturday evening, Russian authorities said. The blast occurred at approximately 7:55 p.m. local time at the entrance to the restaurant, located inside one of the city's Stalin-era "Seven Sisters" towers on Kudrinskaya Square, roughly two kilometers from the Kremlin.
The device, containing an estimated 1 kilogram of TNT-equivalent explosive packed with metal ball bearings, was detonated remotely, according to Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee. The dead include an unidentified woman who was carrying the device, a security guard, and a restaurant patron. Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a terrorism investigation.
The sequence of events
According to Kommersant's sources, the woman approached the restaurant carrying a package described as a gift for a guest inside. A security guard, apparently suspicious, began searching her. The device detonated at that moment—before she entered the building. Investigators believe she likely did not know she was carrying an explosive, a detail that shifts the operational classification away from a conventional suicide bombing toward a remote-triggered proxy attack.
The restaurant had been closed for a private function. Independent outlets Meduza and Astra reported the event was a 55th birthday celebration for General Aleksandr Chayko, appointed commander of Russia's Aerospace Forces in May 2026. Witnesses cited by Astra described vehicles with black government plates near the venue; the Telegram channel VChK-OGPU claimed senior FSB and Defence Ministry officials were present. None of this has been confirmed by Russian authorities, who have not named the event's host or attendees.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called the explosion a "brutal terrorist act" and said the wounded were receiving hospital treatment. The confirmed death toll stands at three, with at least 21 wounded; officials have not indicated any change to that figure. No arrests have been announced and no group has claimed responsibility.

Russian investigators have not identified the woman, confirmed the intended target, or named a suspect in the remote detonation. Social media speculation has already centered on a possible Ukraine connection, though without evidence, while the Kremlin has yet to make any public attribution. Until forensic and communications evidence emerges, the attack outside Balzi Rossi remains defined less by who claims it than by the method used to carry it out.
